Sagging Couch, Hidden Fix

7-19-16.jpgGetting old really bites.  Even for couches, getting old comes with a mess of complications, such as sagging and faded colors.  While a call to us can fix the latter and restore the bright color your couch once had, many people find trouble fixing the former.  One of the most common questions we’re asked is if we have an easy solution to the sagging problem, and we’re happy to say that we do.  Here’s a no-fuss easy fix to make your couch stiff again, as if it was like new.

This method applies to couches that sag once you sit down.  For couches that sag at the backrests, filling the cushion with a polyester material will fix that right up.  For the ones that are limp at the seat-cushion, keep on reading.

The first thing you are going to need to do is take all of the cushions off, and take measurements of the bare side of your couch.  Measure arm rest to arm rest, back of the couch to the edge.  Record these measurements.

Then, take the measurements with you to the local hardware store, and pick out a piece of durable plywood that is close to the size you need.  If you cannot find the right size, buy the closest one and cut it down to size when you get home.

Once you return home, simply lay the plywood down, and place the cushions back where they belong.  Boom.  No more saggy couch.

Using plywood to fix a sagging couch may seem extremely archaic, but the wood acts as a platform for the cushions to stay on, supporting them.  It’s cheap, it’s easy, and, most importantly, it works.  Alternatively, you can buy products at your local furniture or craft store that essentially do the same thing—creates a rigid platform for the cushions to stay on—but it will cost you more.

With a little ingenuity, even the most troubling problems can be easily remedied.  For more carpet and upholstery care tips, be sure to check back every Tuesday and Thursday for our latest blog.  For a professional cleaning, call Bayside Carpet Cleaning for a free in-home estimate!

Hiding Carpet Stains

7-14-16.JPGIt’s the day before your big party.  You’re vacuuming up your carpet when all of a sudden, WHAM!  A pen you accidentally ran over exploded, and ink is all over the floor.  There is no time to call in a service, and you really need to hide the stain.  So, what do you do?  Join us today, as we share an ingenious way to hide even the worst carpet stains in minutes.

Before we begin, we would like to add that this is a last-ditch effort.  Only do it if you have no other alternative, and be sure to call in a professional service as soon as you can to properly remove the stain.

Once a nasty spill occurs on your carpet, your immediate reaction should be to soak up any of the remaining liquid and get the spot to be as dry as possible.  In this case, grab a handful of paper towels and dab around the stain–do not rub!

After there is no excess liquid left, your next step should be to try a homemade treatment, such as a baking soda-vinegar mix.  Apply it to the stain, and soak it up after 5 minutes.  If a stain still persists, no worries, as we have a foolproof method to cover it up.

Go and look in your child’s room for the biggest box of crayons you can find.  Bring them back to the scene of the crime, and find the crayon that best matches the hue of your carpet.  Once you’ve found the corresponding crayon, color in the stain.  No need to go inside the lines here.  At the very least, you’ll be able to make the mark less visible, buying you time until you can call in a service.

However, we will add that coloring in the spot with crayon is just staining your carpet again.  That is why it is extremely important to call Bayside Carpet Cleaning as soon as you can, so that we can remove both stains and leave your carpet looking like new again.

With a cool head and a little knowledge, you can cut even the worst of scenarios down to size.  For more carpet care tips, be sure to check out our blog every Tuesday and Thursday!

Area Rugs: A History

7-12-16.jpgEveryone loves a good area rug, as they can bring accents and moods into a room with minimal effort.  However, despite their colorful appearance, the area rug has a long and intricate history, spanning over several millennia and multiple continents.  Join us today as we delve into the history of the area rug.

The first known area rug dates back to 400 B.C., in Siberia.  What appears to be the first oriental area rug is very similar to the oriental rugs seen today–rectangular shape and a pattern of a border and a field.  These types of area rugs dominated the ancient scene, until the Persians came up with their own in the 1300’s.

Persian rugs are known as some of the most exquisite rugs in the world, and their history clearly models it.  These types of rugs were originally crafted for the sultan, and as a result, were displayed throughout the halls of the palace.  With this being said, Persian rug makers needed to make their rugs fit for royalty, so they experimented with different styles and patterns than the standard oriental rugs.  The result was dazzling, and the patterns were highly coveted.  Collecting these rugs was another hobby for the European aristocracy to have, and consequently trickled down to the common folk.

Rug making in the Eastern Hemisphere continued for several more years, leading to most of the rug designs that we have today.  Even now, owning a Persian rug is considered one of the best area rugs one can own.  However, with a rug of that stature, it needs to be cared for properly and efficiently, as not to ruin the exquisite fibers.

That’s where Bayside Carpet Cleaning comes in.  With our proven cleaning methods, you can be assured that your area rug–no matter if its Persian, oriental, or anything else–will be cleaned properly and safely.

Sand: The Silent Killer

7-7-16.jpgDays in the summer subsequently mean days being spent on the beach.  While you’re cooling off in the ocean this summer, be sure to be wary of a silent carpet killer you could bring back to your home: sand.

Sand, are you seasoned beach-goers know, has the ability to get into every nook and cranny that it possibly can.  From your bag to your shoes and even in-between your toes, sand can cram in there.  The same goes for when it is on your carpet—it can wiggle and thrash its way into the individual fibers of your carpet.  Regardless of what the fibers are made out of, whether it be wool, nylon, polyester, or polypropylene, all are susceptible to ripping and shredding, and sand may exacerbate the process.

By allowing sand to stay in the fibers of your carpet, you are raising the risk of carpet damage, as every step onto it will be an open invitation for sand to do its dirty work.  That is why regular carpet upkeep is tantamount to carpet longevity, especially for frequent beach-goers.  Just a simple vacuum job every week will do, but feel free to do it more frequently depending on how much sand you think you are tracking in.

At the end of the summer season, we do recommend, however, to have a deep professional clean to assuredly remove all of the sand from your carpet.  That way, you will be able to start the fall season fresh, with no sand eating away at your carpet.

Pet Stain Removal

7-5-16.jpgIt’s a weekday morning, you wake up, walk into the living room, and see that your pet has left a nice surprise for you on the carpet.  While we love our pets, they can cause some headaches and heartaches from time to time.  Thankfully, there are some easy, in-home remedies that are sure to get that stain out of your carpet— quick enough to get you out the door on time, and powerful enough to get the stain out, no matter how bad it seems.

An age-old method to get out pet stains in carpet is to use a vinegar-baking soda solution, which will lift the stain while leaving your carpet smelling fresh.  Simply add 2 cups of vinegar, 2 cups of lukewarm water, and 4 tablespoons of baking soda into a spray bottle.  Now, wipe up or pick up what you can, and then generously spray the area with the solution.  Let it sit for a solid 5 minutes, then come back with a dry cloth and dab the area dry.  After you finish, you should have your carpet looking normal again, and smelling fresh.

If the stain still persists after your in-home solution, you can try commercial products, but just be aware that they will do just about the same as the baking soda-vinegar solution.  The best thing to do when a stain still persists is to call in the professionals, and have us remove it the right way.  We offer spot-cleaning in addition to our whole home cleaning, so you can pay for what you need, when you need it.  Not only that, but with a money-back guarantee, you can be assured that you are getting the best cleaning possible.

No stain is too big for Bayside Carpet Cleaning.  Feel free to call us in for all your carpet cleaning needs!

Quick and Easy Upholstery Cleaning

6-30-16.jpgWhether it’s part of a seasonal cleaning or just a quick run-down before guests come over, your upholstery is going to need a cleaning at some point.  Thankfully, there are times where you can do the cleaning yourself, without the need of a professional.  Today, we’re going to tell you how to keep your upholstery looking fresh, whenever you need it the most!

Now, this method will work best for lightly soiled or dusty furniture.  If your favorite piece of upholstery has a nasty stain lodged in or if it is an antique, call us in for a professional clean.

The first thing you are going to need to do is grab a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, and vacuum for at least five minutes.  For best results, vacuum in a left-to-right fashion, using short strokes.  Start at the top, and work your way towards the bottom.  If you do not have an upholstery attachment, either pick one up at your local retailer, or set your vacuum on the lowest suction and do it that way.  Be sure to vacuum at the seams and under the cushions too!

After you have finished vacuuming, it’s time for the actual cleaning.  Grab a small bucket, fill it with 1/2 teaspoon of clear dish soap, and run warm water into it.  The more suds you have, the better.  Take a soft upholstery brush, gather up some of the suds (not the soapy water) and lightly brush around the fabric in small sections.  Do not go overboard here–less is more, as you do not want to soak the upholstery.

Once you have suds covering the entire piece, take a clean, dry cloth, and wipe all them all away.  Once all the suds have gone, you, my friend, have a piece of cleaned upholstery!

This is an easy way to give your furniture a quick clean before any small event.  However, for deeply soiled upholstery or for a cleaning before a major event, call in the cavalry and have us give it a nice, deep, thorough cleaning.  With a money-back guarantee, you can’t go wrong!

Disadvantages of DIY Cleaning

6-28-16.jpgIn a world filled with online help manuals and a quick access to online forums, do-it-yourself projects have become much more common.  They’re attractive, an easy way to save money, and provide a sense of accomplishment when the job is done.  However, there are somethings that are better left to the professionals, like carpet cleaning.

Carpets are delicate materials that can become easily ruined if improperly cared for, or improperly cleaned.  For example, an overuse of chemicals or cleaning solvents can leave a nasty stain in your carpet that will take a whole lot of effort to come out.  This can pose as an tangible outcome for the inexperience carpet cleaner.

Not only that, but those who are not very experienced with carpet cleaning can actually prolong the time in which it takes to clean their carpet.  Even with the best machine out there, if someone doesn’t know how to properly use it, it serves as no use to them.

In addition, giving a carpet a deep clean without the help of a professional can run you more money than it would be just to hire a company.  Sure, the rental price of the carpet cleaner may be cheaper than what the company would charge, but the cost of the detergent, chemicals, add-ons, accessories, and even the damage deposit on the cleaner can accumulate to much more than the original cost of a professional clean.

Opting to go with a carpet cleaning company as opposed to a do-it-yourself gig will not only save you money, but it will result in a fresh, clean carpet that can be guaranteed every time.  Cleaners, like those at Bayside Carpet Cleaning, have been certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration, which means that they know the ins and outs of a deep carpet clean, ensuring a perfect clean any time of year.

Don’t leave the fate of your carpet up to an online guide or some commenter in a forum, call in the professionals and have it done right!  To schedule your free in-home estimate, give us a call today!

Best Way to Clean Tile

6-23-16.pngDo a quick Google search for the best way to clean tile, and we guarantee that you’ll find several different results, each one conflicting with the last on what products to use and the methods on how to clean.  All of these difference can leave people wonder on what is the best way to clean their tile floors.  Thankfully, our tile-cleaning experts at Bayside Carpet have come up with their strategy to a clean tile floor; one that is proven time and time again.

Our experts agree that the number one strategy to tile cleaning is prevention–you don’t have to clean if there is nothing to clean.  What they mean by this is to keep up on regular maintenance: sweeping and vacuuming.  If a spill arises, clean it up promptly, before it has the chance to set in for good.

However, when the floor needs to be cleaned, whether it be for seasonal cleaning or for guests coming over, our experts agree that a mop with water is the best thing for your floor.  Since there are no additives or chemicals, you have no risk of potentially ruining your beautiful tile, all the while giving it the cleaning it deserves.  Although, you can mix in a cup of vinegar in a gallon of water for a cleaning solution that will leave your floors odor-free.

Our experts do recommend, however, to have your tile floors professionally cleaned at least once a year, if not sooner.  Tile floors residing in high-traffic areas may need to be cleaned every few months, in order to better preserve their natural shine.

If you have not had your tile floors cleaned in a long time, now is the time to start!  There is no time like the present, so give us a call today for your free in-home estimate!  After that, we can set up a regular schedule, so you can be assured that your tile will always look its best, anytime of year!

Worst Carpet Stains

6-16-16.jpgWhile on the job, many of our clients ask us what are the hardest carpet stains to remove.  To them, we say that all stains can prove to be a pain, but there are a select few where you’ll need to call in a carpet cleaning professional to properly get them out.  If you find yourself looking at any of the following stains, it would be in your best interest to save the aggravation and give us a call; you’ll thank yourself later.

Out of all the stains that can possibly happen to your carpet, blood stains can leave severe lasting damage.  Blood has the tendency to be suck up fast by the carpet fibers, leaving behind a red-stain long after you wipe up the excess.  For an at-home fix, the best thing you can possibly do is to wipe up the blood as quickly as possible–if you wiped it up almost immediately after it hit the carpet, the chances of a stain remaining are slim.  However, let the blood sit out for a solid 5 minutes and you’ll have a nasty stain left on your carpet.

Fountain pens may be cool, but they run the risk of having ink spilling all over the floor.  Ink is another pesky stain to deal with, as it is absorbed fast and almost never matches the color of your carpet.  A black pen-ink stain can be the worst nightmare to someone with white carpet.  For an at-home solution, take the same approach you had for blood stains, and hopefully you can save the carpet a stain.

Coffee is another tough stain to get out and, more often than not, is extremely noticeable in your carpet.  To treat a coffee spill on the spot, wipe up all you can, and then apply a vinegar-dish detergent solution to the spot.  If you’re lucky, you can save the stain, and give your carpet a little bath at the same time.

Stains like these may be a pain to remove on your own, but they are no match for our experience-proven cleaning strategies.  One call to use will effectively eliminate any stain you may have, no matter the size or the type.
